German A1 - Chapter 2: Numbers and Basic Math

 

Welcome to the second chapter of our German A1 course! Today, we'll learn about numbers and basic mathematical operations in German. This knowledge is essential for everyday situations like shopping, telling time, and more.


1. Key Vocabulary: Numbers 0-20


  • 0 - null
  • 1 - eins
  • 2 - zwei
  • 3 - drei
  • 4 - vier
  • 5 - fünf
  • 6 - sechs
  • 7 - sieben
  • 8 - acht
  • 9 - neun
  • 10 - zehn
  • 11 - elf
  • 12 - zwölf
  • 13 - dreizehn
  • 14 - vierzehn
  • 15 - fünfzehn
  • 16 - sechzehn
  • 17 - siebzehn
  • 18 - achtzehn
  • 19 - neunzehn
  • 20 - zwanzig

2. Grammar Point: Forming Numbers 21-99

To form numbers between 21 and 99:

  1. Say the ones digit
  2. Add "und" (and)
  3. Say the tens digit

For example:

  • 21 = einundzwanzig (one and twenty)
  • 35 = fünfunddreißig (five and thirty)
  • 48 = achtundvierzig (eight and forty)

Note: For 30, we say "dreißig" instead of "dreizig".


3. Basic Math Operations

  • plus (+) - plus
  • minus (-) - minus
  • mal (×) - multipliziert mit
  • geteilt (÷) - geteilt durch
  • ist gleich (=) - ist gleich

4. Useful Phrases

  • Wie viel ist...? - How much is...?
  • Es kostet ... Euro. - It costs ... euros.
  • Ich bin ... Jahre alt. - I am ... years old.
  • Die Telefonnummer ist... - The phone number is...

5. Exercises

  1. Write out the following numbers in German:
    a) 7
    b) 13
    c) 25
    d) 42
    e) 56
  2. Solve these math problems in German:
    a) fünf plus drei ist gleich ...
    b) zehn minus vier ist gleich ...
    c) zwei mal sechs ist gleich ...
    d) achtzehn geteilt durch drei ist gleich ...
  3. Fill in the blanks:
    a) Ich bin _________ (27) Jahre alt.
    b) Meine Telefonnummer ist _________ (0176 5842 3910).
    c) Der Apfel kostet _________ (1,50) Euro.

6. Homework

  1. Write out all the numbers from 0 to 30 in German.
  2. Create five math problems using numbers up to 100 and the four basic operations. Write both the problem and the solution in German.
  3. Write a short paragraph about yourself in German, including your age and phone number.
