I recently kicked off my journey into the world of 3 Meals a Day - Light, and wow, what a charming and humorous experience it has been! This show brings together some of my favorite celebrities for a delightful cooking adventure set in the breathtaking landscapes of Dumulmeori, Pyeongchang, in Gangwon-do. The premise is simple: three meals a day, lots of laughter, and the occasional mishap, all while surrounded by nature. Let's dive into the highlights of the first episode!

The Arrival: Packing for Adventure
The episode begins with a hilarious scene where the cast has to sit down with the director to discuss what to bring for their countryside stay. It's like packing for a flight with a strict 33 kg weight limit! Cha Seung Won, in a classic case of overpacking, brings an astonishing 74.26 kg of luggage, while Yoo Hae Jin keeps it minimal at just 16 kg. Fortunately, most of their items get cleared for takeoff!
Arriving at the stunning house surrounded by blooming potato fields and greeted by Bokgu, a friendly dog belonging to the house owner (who conveniently isn’t around during filming), sets a warm, inviting tone for the show. The picturesque scenery instantly made me want to pack my bags and join them!
Cooking Shenanigans: Kakdugi and Gochujang Jjigae
After unpacking, they jump right into meal prep around 2:30 PM, starting with Kakdugi, a delightful cubed radish kimchi, followed by rice. However, disaster strikes when Hae Jin underestimates the water needed for the rice. After a moment of panic, they manage to fix it, showcasing that not all cooking adventures are smooth sailing!
As they dive into making Gochujang Jjigae, Cha Seung Won sends Hae Jin out to the potato fields to gather just seven potatoes. This simple task of preparing the Jjigae becomes a source of conflict when Hae Jin decides to add kimchi to the jjigae, much to Seung Won’s annoyance. Because it happened in split seconds as he went about to pick some chillies. To smooth things over, Hae Jin offers him a drink of Makgeolli, which leads to a humorous scene where Seung Won must adapt his dish on the fly, throwing in some tofu and extra Cheongyang peppers for a spicy kick.
The Tarp Trouble: Nature’s Fury
After the cooking chaos, the duo takes on the task of fixing a tarp outside. Little did they know that their hard work would soon be tested. After hours of setup, a torrential downpour that night obliterates their handiwork! Seung Won tries to alert Hae Jin to the mess, but Hae Jin is too exhausted to care.
The next morning, Hae Jin is shocked to discover the tarp disaster. Instead of fixing it immediately, he opts for a jog around the picturesque village, with the soothing melody of “Jogging” by Lucy Island in the background, creating a lovely atmosphere. Meanwhile, Seung Won prepares breakfast ingredients, only to find the potatoes are too small and heads back to the fields for more.
After their morning routines, Hae Jin helps clean up the water damage, and they finally tackle the tarp situation. Hae Jin starts a fire and makes a comforting breakfast of rice crust porridge from the leftover rice while Seung Won reheats the jjigae. They complete the meal with some sautéed sliced potatoes and a fluffy egg roll, finally enjoying a hearty breakfast with kimchi on the side.
A Surprise Guest and a Perfect End
After breakfast, they head into town to buy ingredients for Suyuk, a delicious boiled pork dish, and coffee powder for coloring. Just as they settle back at the house, they realize their first guest is on the way. The suspense builds as they prepare to greet this mystery guest.
When the guest arrives, it’s none other than the popular singer Lim Young Woong! The unexpected encounter is marked by Hae Jin’s protective instincts for Bokgu, fearing for the dog’s safety as it gets close to the car. The episode ends with a delightful teaser for the next installment, leaving viewers eager for more.
Overall Impressions
The first episode of 3 Meals a Day - Light is a beautiful blend of laughter, culinary adventures, and the charm of rural living. It perfectly captures the spirit of cooking with friends while showcasing the occasional hiccups that come with it. The scenic backdrop of potato fields, the sweet companionship of Bokgu, and the camaraderie between the cast create an enjoyable viewing experience.
If you’re a fan of cooking shows or simply looking for something light-hearted to watch, I highly recommend giving this series a try. It’s not just about the food; it’s about the moments, the friendships, and the joy of sharing meals together. I can’t wait to see what the next episode has in store!
