It was the last few minutes before lunch when Amina Iskandar noticed something unusual in her locker. She paused, fingers hovering over the small note that had been slipped through one of the locker’s vents. The note was delicately folded, as if the person who’d left it had put in careful thought.
Curiosity won her over, and she unfolded the paper. Inside was a short message written in neat, looping handwriting:
“Keep smiling, Amina. The world always needs a little more light.”
The words were simple but left her with a strange warmth. She had no idea who could have written it or why, and she tucked it into her notebook, deciding not to think too much about it. Maybe it was just a random act of kindness—one of those little things you hear about but never expect to happen to you.
The next day, however, Amina found another note waiting in her locker.
“Today’s a new page. Make it a good one.”
A small doodle of a smiling sun sat in the corner of the paper. She smiled at the cute drawing, the kind that reminded her of the little sketches her younger brother would make on her notebooks. By now, she was almost certain someone in her class was leaving these notes, but who?
As days passed, the notes kept coming, each one with a new message, some with little drawings—a heart, a shooting star, even a cheerful moon. Amina began to look forward to these small surprises. They gave her a quiet reassurance, like someone out there was rooting for her, even if she didn’t know who.
One day, after finding a note that read, “There’s courage in kindness, and kindness in courage,” Amina decided to try a little investigation. After all, it was hard to ignore a mystery right under her nose. She started paying closer attention to her classmates, watching for any clues about who could be behind the notes. But the days rolled by without any hints.
Then one Wednesday after school, she happened to see Rayyan Zahir walking by the lockers, a folded paper sticking out of his notebook as he paused near her locker. Amina stopped, her curiosity growing. Could he be the mysterious note writer?
Rayyan caught sight of her and quickly tried to hide the paper, his face turning slightly red. Amina smiled, taking a small step forward.
“Rayyan,” she began, trying not to startle him, “Is that… yours?” She pointed to the small paper that was now mostly hidden in his notebook.
He hesitated, then gave a sheepish nod, scratching the back of his neck. “I just thought… well, I thought maybe it might brighten someone’s day. It wasn’t much, just a little reminder that someone cares.”
Amina’s heart warmed at his words. It had indeed brightened her day, more than once, and knowing Rayyan was behind it all made it feel even more meaningful.
“Thank you, Rayyan. I looked forward to them every day,” she said, smiling. “It felt like I had a secret friend cheering me on.”
Rayyan grinned, relieved that she understood. “You’re welcome, Amina. I’m glad they made a difference.”
They shared a quiet laugh, standing side by side as they talked about school and little things that made them happy. From that day on, the notes continued, but now with a new addition—a signature. Each one was signed, “Your friend, Rayyan.”
And as the days went by, their friendship grew, sparked by simple words and little gestures that turned the ordinary into something beautiful.
