In August 2019, I embarked on an incredible journey to a summer camp in China organized by the Kongzi Institute and Beijing Foreign Studies University. The program united participants from various Kongzi Institutes across Europe, creating a diverse and vibrant community. Our adventure began with a late-evening flight from Malaysia on Malaysia Airlines, landing in Beijing in the early hours of the morning.
Settling into our accommodations within North China University of Technology, we were introduced to the nuances of Chinese cuisine at a nearby Halal canteen. The absence of "Halal" signage was replaced by the term "Qing Zhen," signifying the food's Halal status. It was a flavorful introduction to the cultural mosaic we were about to explore.
The following day commenced with language assessments at the International School campus, determining our Mandarin proficiency levels. Placed in Level 6, I eagerly embraced a week packed with Mandarin language courses and captivating cultural experiences. From mastering Chinese knotting to Taiji Fan exercises and traditional painting, each session painted a vivid picture of China's rich heritage.
Our days were a beautiful blend of structured learning and adventurous explorations. We traversed through Beijing, visiting iconic landmarks like the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, and the awe-inspiring Great Wall of China at Badaling. Roaming the Hutong districts revealed an intimate side of Beijing, steeped in history and local charm.
Amidst the whirlwind of cultural immersion and explorations during my summer camp journey in China, one standout moment remains etched in my memory—the opportunity to represent the students by delivering the Opening Speech at the Welcoming Event in Beijing Foreign Studies University. It was a surreal honor and a testament to the inclusive atmosphere fostered by the program.
Standing before an audience comprising fellow participants from various corners of the world, I shared heartfelt words that echoed our collective excitement and gratitude for the enriching experience that awaited us. It was a moment of pride and responsibility, encapsulating the essence of cultural exchange and unity among diverse backgrounds.
This experience, delivering the opening address, became a defining moment that symbolized the spirit of camaraderie and the shared enthusiasm for learning and embracing the beauty of China's culture.
Transitioning to Shanghai via a lightning-fast bullet train was an experience in itself, condensing what used to be a nearly 20-hour journey into a mere 4-hour ride. Shanghai welcomed us with a different dialect, momentarily throwing us off our Mandarin-speaking game. However, visits to the Bund, Nanjing Road, and the tranquil Yuyuan Garden showcased Shanghai's beauty and cultural vibrancy.
Our team's creative expression unfolded on stage as we interpreted our camp experiences through a song performed to Namewee's Tokyo Bon melody. It became a cherished moment, encapsulating the essence of our journey in musical harmony.
Yet, amidst the excitement, nature threw us a curveball. Typhoon Lekima disrupted our return plans, canceling our flight and extending our stay in Shanghai. Unfortunately, this meant missing the Eidul Adha celebration back home in Malaysia. However, this unforeseen delay led to a serendipitous discovery—a visit to Zhujiajiao, an ancient water town. Its canals and bridges transported me to an era depicted in Wuxia dramas, igniting my imagination and adding another layer to our adventure.
As our extended stay came to an end, we bid farewell to Shanghai and the friends we had made. The mixed emotions of leaving this newfound community were balanced by the anticipation of reuniting with loved ones back in Malaysia.
